Newborn Photography FAQ's

When is the best time to have a newborn session?

Newborns grow so quickly so it’s best to capture those precious early days as soon as possible. Normally it is best if the session takes place within the first two weeks as after that it can be harder to capture those curled up sleepy poses.

When should I book my newborn photography session?

You can contact me to book a session at any time, although I would recommend getting in touch as early as possible as my calendar can book up a few weeks in advance. I book you in based on your due date and adjust this date as necessary, you just have to let me know when baby arrives.

My baby is already born – can I still book a session?

I often have last minute availability due to early and late arrivals, so please do still get in touch. I will always try to fit you in!

How long will my session last?

Newborn photography sessions are different from other types of photoshoots as they are totally baby led. The session normally takes between 2-3 hours but can take slightly longer if your baby needs a little more time - we take things at a relaxed pace with plenty of time for cuddles, nappy changes and feeds.

What safety techniques do you practice?

The safety of your baby is always my highest priority throughout the session. I only practice safe posing techniques - the comfort and safety of your baby always comes first.  I am fully trained in newborn posing techniques and safety.  I have also attended numerous first aid courses including those specialising in newborn, baby and child first aid. So you can be confident your baby is in safe hands.

What happens if my newborn is having a bad day?

Parents often worry about whether their newborn will cry at the session – please do not worry this is normal and there is time built into the session for settling your baby.

Do I need to do anything to prepare for my session?

Loosen your baby’s clothing and nappy beforehand – babies can become unsettled while being undressed/changed so this can really help.  Try to keep baby awake for as long as possible before our session time – it’s not always possible and this is not a problem, but can help them to sleep soundly during the session. Feed your baby at the last minute before your session (or even once you arrive) – when baby is in a ”milk drunk” state they get very sleepy!

Do I need to take any clothes or blankets for my baby’s newborn session?

I have a large selection of props, blankets, wraps, outfits, headbands and hats to choose from. Please let me know beforehand of your colour preferences and if you would like to incorporate any special items in the images.

What if my child is ill on the day?

Your baby (and family’s health) is of upmost importance – if you or your baby is unwell please let me know and we will reschedule once everyone is better.

What should I wear?

The studio will be warm and cosy to keep your baby sleepy - it is going to feel rather warm for everyone else, so it’s best to dress bearing this in mind. If you would like some photos with your baby it is best to stick to plain colours and avoid white where possible. A change of clothes is always a good idea… just in case!

Can siblings be included in the photos?

If you would like siblings to be included in some of the images please let me know. Sibling shots are a lovely addition to a newborn photo session. I normally do sibling poses at the beginning of the shoot as the session can be rather long for them - it can be a good idea if possible to get a friend or relative to take them home once these images are completed.

Where does the session take place?

The session takes place in my cosy home studio. I have a range of props, backdrops and outfits that can be used.

Do you travel?

Working in my studio is ideal as it allows for the full use of props and backdrops etc, however if necessary, I can work on a mobile basis and come to your house – I do have a fully portable setup. Please let me know if this is something you are interested in.

What days and times are available?

Newborn sessions are generally scheduled in the evenings and at weekends.

What does the session fee cover?

The non-refundable session fee covers your initial email and phone consultation, the newborn session, use of blankets, props and outfits, and full editing/retouching of your images. The session fee does not include any digital or printed images.

What is the proof gallery?

Your proof gallery will be a private gallery on my website where you can view the images from your newborn session. You can then choose which images you wish to purchase as part of your package.

When will my proof gallery be available?

I will contact you when your proof gallery is ready – this is normally around 21 days after your newborn session. Your proof gallery will be available for a period of 14 days for you to choose your images. If you would prefer to attend a viewing session instead please let me know.

Do you offer additional prints and other products?

You can order as many additional prints as required, and I also offer a range of wall art products. I work with local framers to provide quality bespoke framed products.

When will my digital images, prints and additional products be ready/delivered?

Your high resolution digital images will be available for download within seven days of you placing your order. Prints, wall art and other products are usually delivered between 2-4 weeks after your order has been placed – I will discuss delivery methods and times beforehand.

Do you provide raw, unedited files?

I am afraid that I cannot provide RAW files. I will deliver the retouched images for your use, as these are the final product and reflect the quality of my creative work.
